Using BOOKMATCH visuals in your classroom. . .

The BOOKMATCH terminology is appropriate for all grade levels.  However, in order to simplify the use with primary grade readers, we have the GOLD series posters designed for 6-, 7-, and 8-year-olds.  Older readers, and perhaps some of your younger readers, may be ready for more sophisticated questions regarding book selection.  Therefore, we also have the GREEN series posters designed for 9-14-year-olds.  Each is slightly different, with the goal of providing developmental and differential support for readers.  You can decide which version will work best for your students based on their prior knowledge and current self-selection skills.

Having a BOOKMATCH poster in the classroom shows that this will be an important part of what students do during independent reading time.  We reveal the poster on the first day of school to briefly explain that students will learn how to select their own just right books.

A comprehensive look at BOOKMATCH and independent reading. . .

This book provides a guide for setting up and managing an effective independent reading time in which students truly engage in the practice of reading while building a positive attitude.  Teachers are presented with practical suggestions for setting up their classrooms and preparing for their capable readers.  Information is shared throughout about how teachers model through thinking aloud and conversations they have with their students.  The chapters provide a guideline for the teacher’s role and teacher scripts during independent reading time and when using BOOKMATCH.  Student work samples and transcripts of student sharing are also presented.
